The smallest of tweaks will quickly land you out of the ball park. That unit will teacj you because the sweet spot is very unforgiving. If you couldn't record well on digital you haven't learned how hard recording can be. The margin between the noise floor and ceiling is very narrow compared to pro tape or digital. Cassettes are OK for mixdowns when you have a completed master but thay are kind of sucky for multitracking.
There's allot more to audio quality then it simply being tape. If you think you're going to get any kind of analog mojo from one it ain't gonna happen. I used to own a Tascam 424, (the gray ones) and upgraded to the 8 channel version which I still own. More questions concerning hardware and preamps to come, just testing the waters for now to see if there are any unforeseen snags in my proposed method. I've heard of people making some crazy cool arrangements when using different bouncing strategies on these tape studios-has anyone tried using the DAW this way (as more of an effects processor) to eventually track to tape? (may run some line mic preamps out of the mixer before into the 424)
What I will do is track and mix vocals in the DAW (Abelton) and then run the wet vocal track(s) through an analog mixer and eventually into the TASCAM-blending the analog-tracked instrument components with the wet vocals sent from the DAW. My upcoming strategy will be a hybrid of tracking direct to tape (hopefully using the new TASCAM) for most instruments and using my DAW to track and mix vocals (EQ+effects). Now for the more technical stuff-I've found myself moving to the analog camp recently and growing weary and overwhelmed by the THOUSANDS of production options available right away when I record through a USB interface to a DAW. So if anyone can cross their fingers for me, I could use all the good vibes I can get to make this bad boy power on! Judging by the seller's other items-they are not musicians but just Goodwill-style sellers.
It looks like a pristine unit from the pictures, but was sold as-is and untested because it didn't come with a power supply. Taking a gamble on an UNTESTED Tascam 424-just bought on eBay for $100 after shipping.
